Barbara Bell, artist/printmaker

Barbara Bell makes relief prints from conventional and unusual materials.

Yoga and meditation also have influenced her art practice. She is an Advanced Hatha Yoga instructor. Her philospophy on leading students through a yoga practice also defines what she presents to the art viewer. “When I work with yoga students I give them the opportunity to observe themselves and the present moment without judgement. My printmaking imagery seems simplistic at first glance, but it is designed to be a springboard for the viewer to observe their reactions and go deeper into what rises to the surface in their emotional responses.”

The process of creating artwork is as significant as the final print, “Engaging in art making and meditation both dampen the pre-frontal cortex and elicit an Alpha state, or as some artists may call it ‘being in the flow’. That brainwave rhythm permits creativity and problem solving, and contentment. It is my hope to illicite this state for the viewers of my work, and meanings and experiences will differ from person to person.”

Ms. Bell’s work has been exhibited in New York City at Westbeth, The Knitting Factory, Manhattan Graphics Center, and the Interchurch Gallery; The Boston Print Fair, The Haugesund Museet-Billedgalleri, Norway, The Hunterdon Museum, “The Art of Healing” projects at Englewood Hospital, and galleries in the metro NY/NJ area. She is a juried member of NAWA, National Association of Women Artists.
